STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – A central Wisconsin native is reportedly on the short list to become the head coach of one of the NHL’s most historic franchises.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, former Wisconsin Badger and SPASH graduate Joe Pavelski, 41, is being described as a “Martin St. Louis-style candidate” for the Toronto Maple Leafs as their wide-ranging head-coaching search continues.
Toronto has yet to schedule an interview with Pavelski, as their search has reportedly included consideration of more than 50 candidates, such as former New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy and Anaheim Ducks assistant coach Jay Woodcroft.
Pavelski played 18 seasons in the NHL for the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars, retiring as one of the league’s most consistent American scorers, holding the record for most playoff goals by an American-born player (74).
