STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Portage County man suspected of causing significant injuries to a child will go to trial in late August.
David Schmies is accused of abusing a three-month-old child, who showed significant brain and bone injuries. Those included broken bones in various stages of healing and poor color. That led to charges for repeated physical abuse of a child, filed in February 2022.
The case has been scheduled for trial on several other occasions, only to be canceled for various reasons. In one case, the defense team couldn’t find an expert witness. Other cancellations weren’t explained in court records.
The 27-year-old also turned down a plea offer early in the proceedings.
The latest attempt at trial is scheduled for August 31st through September 4th. A final pretrial hearing will occur on August 12th.
Schmies faces up to 60 years in the state prison system if found guilty. He is being held at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Facility on unrelated charges.
