WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Alder Doug Diny has won a promotion.
The District 4 representative defeated incumbent Mayor Katie Rosenberg with 52% of the vote on Tuesday to win a four-year term in the city’s highest office.
Diny won support from three former Mayors including Robert Mielke, who lost to Rosenberg in 2020. Rosenberg had the backing of Alder Lisa Rasmussen and one former Mayor and current Marathon County Supervisor John Robinson.
The race featured a large amount of outside interest with more than $300,000 spent on advertising for the two candidates. Much of that came in the last two weeks.
Despite the non-partisan nature of the office, Democrats lined up behind Rosenberg while Diny saw support from Republican groups.
Rosenberg will oversee one more City Council meeting on April 9th. Diny will be sworn in by April 16th, which is also when the City Council will meet for its organizational meeting.
