Before you pile your plate with mashed potatoes, turkey, and pumpkin pie, why not get outside and get moving for a fantastic local cause?
The 17th Annual Turkey Trot is officially returning to the 400 Block in downtown Wausau on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, kicking off bright and early at 8:30 AM.
Steph from the United Way of Marathon County stopped by the WDEZ studio to chat with Bryan Scott about what’s in store for this year’s run—and how it directly impacts families across Central Wisconsin.
Running for a Vital Local Cause
Every step you take on Thanksgiving morning goes right back into our neighborhood.
All race proceeds benefit the Marathon County Hunger Coalition, an initiative that has been serving the area for about 13 years. Their primary mission is getting fresh, healthy produce to local families who lack reliable transportation or live outside easy access to food pantries.
Last year, Central Wisconsin showed up in a massive way: 2,400 runners laced up their sneakers, raising over $98,000.
This year, the team has set their sights on shattering that milestone with a target of 2,600 participants.
A 5K Course Built for Everyone
Worried you haven’t logged enough treadmill miles to hit the pavement? Don’t sweat it.
This 5K route is completely flat—zero hills to battle—making it perfect whether you are chasing a personal record or simply taking a morning stroll with a hot coffee in hand.
Here is how you can tackle race morning:
-
The Serious Runners: Head straight to the front of the starting pack and set your pace.
-
The Casual Joggers: Claim your spot right in the middle for a fun, relaxed jog.
-
Families, Dogs & Strollers: Hang out toward the back of the pack where you have plenty of room to cruise at your own speed.
The course begins at the 400 Block, loops down along the scenic riverwalk, winds back past the library, and finishes right back where you started. Along the way, you’ll catch gorgeous morning views of Wausau that you rarely get to take in on a quiet holiday morning.
Key Dates, Registration & Warm Swag
If you want to save a few bucks for your Black Friday shopping, make sure you lock in your spot early.
-
Price Jump Deadline: Register before November 8 to grab the $30 early registration fee. After November 8, the price goes up to $40.
-
Limited Edition Merch: Keep your ears toasty through winter with custom Turkey Trot beanies, available for purchase this year for just $15.
-
Volunteers Needed: Not running this year? They need helpers on the course, for packet pickup the day before, and on race morning.
You can register, sign up to volunteer, or find route information directly through the United Way of Marathon County website at unitedwaymc.org or by checking out the official Facebook event page. Day-of registration will also be open on-site, though shirt availability is only guaranteed for pre-registered participants.
