NEILLSVILLE, WI (WSAU) — Clark County has announced it has discontinued the use of FLOCK safety cameras.
Sheriff Kerry Kirn announced the move in a Facebook post, saying the department officially cut ties with the company on September 10th.
“As Sheriff, I have a responsibility both to provide our deputies with effective tools to keep our communities safe and to listen to the people we serve,” the post reads. “I heard the concerns expressed by Clark County residents regarding the use of this technology, including concerns about privacy, and I took those concerns seriously.”
Kirn thanked the public for their input in the matter, saying “public trust is essential to effective law enforcement, and that trust requires us to listen to the people we serve.”
Clark County becomes the latest jurisdiction to announce it’s cut ties with FLOCK. Just this week, the cities of Sun Prairie, Oconomowoc, Racine, Neenah, and Waukesha all voted to end their agreements with the company. Other communities have covered up the cameras so they can’t capture data while discussing the future of their agreements.
FLOCK has come under fire after offering to sell the City of Sheboygan five years’ worth of its own traffic data. The company’s agreement with the city did not allow it to market data, including traffic counts.
