WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A staple of Tony Evers’ time as Governor has been the yearly back-to-school tour. On Wednesday, the former teacher made his last two stops in Wausau and Superior.
The Democrat said the tour has always been about supporting education and those in the classroom. “I’ve done this for several reasons. One, it’s good for my soul to be with kids again. But it’s also important for me to talk about how important public education.”
He says it’s also a way to showcase the work teachers are doing every day. “I want to be a good messenger, [show people] they can have confidence in the system.”
Wednesday’s stops included Horace Mann Middle School in Wausau, where Evers sat in on a lesson about decision-making and risks in one classroom. He then toured the new library before ending his visit in a science classroom.
Evers conducted the back-to-school tours each year except 2020. Previous Wausau-area stops have included Wausau East High School in 2025 and Rothschild Elementary in 2022.
The Democrat is not running for reelection this fall.
