MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Tiffany wasted no time hitting the campaign trail, stopping at Mosinee Brewing Company on Thursday.
Tiffany immediately went after Democratic candidate David Crowley, saying the Milwaukee County Executive carries the blame for the area’s high tax burden and last spring’s snafu that left employees without health coverage. “[Those employees] had their health insurance expire as a result of [Crowley] being asleep at the switch. To say that he should get a promotion from Milwaukee County Executive to Chief Executive of the state, I don’t think the people want someone who is going to fail.”
The 7th Congressional District Representative, who is vacating the seat after his current term, also says he doesn’t see a “dime’s worth of difference” between Crowley and his primary opponent, Madison-area Representative Francesca Hong. “Two weeks ago he said ‘My policies will be very much the same as Hong’s. So you can see that he’s going to do those same things.”
Tiffany opened the event by telling the crowd that “Thanksgiving is safe this year,” a reference to Hong’s now-deleted social media post which called for the cancelation of the holiday. He also took questions from the audience on healthcare, education, and affordable housing.
Lieutenant Governor Candidate David Varnham and Republican Attorney General Candidate Eric Toney joined Tiffany at the event. A group of protesters was also set up outside Mosinee Brewing Company, holding signs that read “time to retire Tom,” and “MAGA cuts hurt veterans.”
The 2028 Governor’s race is expected to be tight, with Sabato’s Crystal Ball rating the race as “leans Democratic.” Had Hong won the Democratic primary, the race would be considered a toss-up.
