MADISON, WI (WSAU) – One of the top candidates for the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor has announced an end to his campaign.
Despite finishing second to Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong in recent polls, former Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes has ended his campaign, according to a video uploaded to his social media accounts. He stated that it is “very clear who our nominee is going to be,” but he did not formally endorse any of the remaining candidates.
“We have to do everything to beat Tom Tiffany,” Barnes added.
According to POLITICO, Barnes’ campaign and the state Democratic Party are braced for media reports about Barnes and his team, who were on call all day Thursday planning their path forward.
Barnes’ campaign spokesperson, Darby O’Connor, stated that “there are no allegations of misconduct or wrongdoing against Mandela.” However, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Barnes is facing allegations that he previously used his position within the state Democratic Party to have sexual contact with young women, based on a party investigation completed in 2025.
