MENASHA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) -A tornado tore through Menasha on Monday, leveling buildings, knocking over cars and ripping through trees.
The National Weather Service said the twister touched down around noon. NWS survey teams are heading to the area to assess the damage.
Videos online show trees stripped of their leaves and toppled, power poles knocked down and several houses and structures damaged. The Menasha Police Department said it along with the Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue Department and Department of Public Works is responding to areas impacted by the storm. Emergency responders are assessing damage, addressing hazards and responding to calls for service.
Police are asking residents to stay away from affected areas unless absolutely necessary. They’re also urging people to avoid downed power lines and treat all utility lines as energized.
Residents should not drive around barricades or enter areas closed by emergency personnel. Police are asking people to limit non-emergency travel to allow first responders and utility crews access to impacted areas.
