WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Plans for a potential data center have consumed much of Mayor Matt Zacher’s time in the last few months.
Zacher says the developers have submitted some development plans to the city, but the documents are by no means ready for primetime. “It’s not complete yet, so we are not sure when it is going to end up [before] the Plan Commission. But we are working on it as they bring that information forward.”
Zacher says he has been holding one-on-one discussions at the library to help cool down the discussions and clear up lies that have circulated about him and the project. He feels that has led to a more productive dialogue, allowing residents to hear what is on the table and what still needs to be worked out.
“The really big things are noise control and the pollution that would come from the generators that they would fire up a couple of times a month for testing,” said Zacher. “We don’t want a data center that doesn’t provide the security of those ‘ifs.’ If it’s going to be noisy, we don’t want it. If it’s going to be [polluting,] we don’t want it.”
He adds that the developers have put forward solutions, which he expects will be discussed at public information sessions. “We are strongly recommending that they [the developers] do that. To get this out to the community.”
While limited proposals have been submitted to the city, Zacher says it’s still unclear when the idea will be ready for the Plan Commission. He expects that when it is, they will hold the discussions as stand-alone meetings in a larger venue.
