WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An informational session on a proposed data center in Wisconsin Rapids has been postponed.
“People are motivated, angered, and become emotional about these large data center projects. It is a learning opportunity to think about the electricity system, how our rates are set, how we pay for electricity, how it’s regulated, who makes the decisions, and what we can do for ourselves,” said Executive Director Nick Hylla.
WAOW-TV was set to interview Mayor Matt Zacher, to discuss the proposed data centers. His office informed us that plans were developing and the mayor no longer felt comfortable speaking on the issue.
Thursday evening, the Mayors Office released a press release saying that the hearing planned for next Monday was postponed.
Here’s what Mayor Zacher said in the press release: “In a democratic, market-based system, it’s essential that all potential businesses have access to a transparent and equitable review process. We also have an obligation to maintain ordinances that safeguard residents’ quality of life and to thoughtfully address the concerns they share with us.”
Zacher said this action is to allow for more time to review and distribute information on the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) submitted by PCH WI Holdings LLC. and to set up a public listening session.
The data center request may be considered at a future planning commission, which would include a public hearing.
