Melvin Cornelius
FRIENDSHIP, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An Adams County man accused of firing at officers during a chase through Big Flats in 2024 pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree intentional homicide Tuesday and was found guilty by the court.
Melvin Cornelious, 47, from Friendship had charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, intentionally pointing a firearm at a law enforcement officer, fleeing an officer and possession of meth dismissed but read in.
Investigators say Cornelious was high on meth and driving in the Town of Big Flats when he called 911, saying “there ain’t no way I’m going down with my guns and drugs.”
Officers caught up to his vehicle but he refused to stop. He got out of his vehicle at one point and fired at officers.
A sheriff’s deputy returned fire, striking him. Officers provided first aid at the scene before booking him into the Adams County jail.
Cornelious has a sentencing hearing scheduled for June 24.
