WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny is working out of a new space these days, and it’s not by choice.
A busted pipe caused water damage to three levels of office space, including the Mayor’s office, last weekend. Diny spent the early part of last week moving his workspace down the hall to a conference room. He says it happened during the last polar vortex, which brought dangerously cold temperatures over several days in January.
“[It was a pipe] on a radiator. At some point last Sunday [February 1st] it broke loose and flooded that end of the building, from the third floor down to my office and the Maple Room [First-floor conference room located near Council Chambers],” said Diny. “So the ceiling in my office is destroyed, probably the floor and drywall.”
He say he’s making the best of the situation, and may even take some of the good parts and apply them going forward. “It’s maybe an opportunity to clean out my office and get organized. In fact, in my [temporary] ofice, I’m looking at a wall. It seems that’s maybe a little better than looking out the window. So maybe I’ll rearrange when I get back in.
“Let’s make some hay out of it and get a fresh start,” he added. “Change the che in the room, if you will.”
Many of Diny’s documents and books were damaged. He hopes that they can have the space dried out later this week so contractors can start repairing the walls and floors.
The city has opened an insurance claim for the work, as Diny says the incident was “definitly due to the severe weather,” meaning taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for the repairs.
