Bennie Green
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – More than two years after a shooting on U.S. Highway 51, uncertainty remains about the trial of the man believed to be responsible.
Bennie Green, 41, of Rusk County was arrested in connection with the October 2023 incident, facing attempted homicide and a dozen other charges.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a driver on U.S. 51 near Maine reporting that they and their vehicle had been shot. The driver survived. The shooting led to a police chase ending with a Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy ramming the suspect’s car in Wausau.
Initially deemed not fit for trial, Green was later found competent in September of last year. Since then, court records indicate numerous hearings, plea deal discussion, a scheduled jury trial which was later removed, another competency exam, and the removal of an attorney from the case.
On Tuesday, a jury status hearing occurred with Green representing himself. The court is working to appoint new counsel. The next review hearing is scheduled for January 12.
