WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The former Town of Bergen Clerk has pleaded not guilty to nearly a dozen charges related to the theft of public funds from the township.
Gloriann Doyle is accused of writing multiple unauthrized checks to herself, totaling more than $100,000, after other leaders found irregularities in the town’s finances. That included checks she wrote to herself between July of 2024 and last January.
Doyle said she had fallen behind on her finances, including her mortgage, and was using the money to catch up. She’s also suspected of stealing a large amount of money from the Wisconsin Valley Art Association during her time on the group’s board.
The 65-year-old remains jailed on a $50,000 cash bond. A status conference has been scheduled for May 21st. No trial dates have been set.
All 11 counts against her carry a maximum combined sentence of more than 60 years in prison. The most serious count, Teft of movable property valued at more than $100,000, is worth up to 12.5 years in prison.
Doyle was the lone candidate on the ballot for Town Clerk last April but resigned the position before the election. A write-in campaign for the interim clerk, Amy Veenendaal, was successful in defeating her.
