WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused of shooting another individual in the abdomen during an argument has pleaded no contest to one charge of attempted homicide, avoiding a June trial.
Richard Mason was scheduled for a pretrial conference on Friday, which was switched to a plea hearing at the last minute. The sides then agreed to drop the use of a dangerous weapon modifier from the count and dismissed a misdemeanor charge for carrying a concealed weapon.
The court then found Mason guilty and ordered sentencing. A presentence investigation will not be conducted.
Mason shot another man during an argument outside a home on Emter Street in 2022. The victim survived the shooting and was able to go to a nearby home for help, while Mason left the scene. Officers caught up to him on Lake View Drive and arrested him without incident.
Witnesses said Mason shouted “you ruined my life” as he was fleeing.
The case was scheduled for a three-day trial in late June. The 31-year-old will now face a sentencing hearing on May 7th, which has been scheduled for two hours.
Mason is being held in the Marathon County Jail on a 250,000 cash bond. He previously pled not guilty to the charges.
