STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — An inmate at the Portage County Jail who didn’t return from a furlough is back in custody after a resident spotted him near a local grocery store last Weekend.
Matthew Garsmoke will now face counts of escaping arrest, bail jumping, and resisting or obstructing an officer. He was released from the Portage County Jail for what was supposed to be a three-hour furlough on June 28th but didn’t return at his scheduled time.
Officers issued a be on the lookout for him a few days later. Then on Saturday, July 6th a resident saw him on a bicycle near Metro Market. Officers caught up with him and arrested him near the store that afternoon.
He is scheduled for an initial appearance on those charges this afternoon. Court records indicate that the 28-year-old also has a plea and sentencing hearing scheduled for Friday, July 12th covering numerous open cases for burglary, forgery, and possession of meth.
