WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A member of the Wausau City Council is asking for more information regarding the city’s involvement in plans to redevelop the Wausau Center Mall site.
The Wausau Pilot and Review reports that some on the council are beginning to question how much the city has put into the project, asking Economic Development Director Liz Brodek to bring those numbers to a future Economic Development Committee meeting.
The mall was demolished in 2021 to make way for what is planned to be a new mixed-use retail and housing development as envisioned by Wausau Opportunity Zone. Their agreement with the city for the property included some $1.6 million in public funding and a forgivable loan.
There’s also some confusion over the status of a previous agreement to sell a parking ramp to WOZ for $1. Brodek has promised to compile the numbers on the city’s involvement before the next committee meeting, currently scheduled for June 7th.
