WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Milwaukee County Executive and Democratic candidate for Governor David Crowley toured Bridge Community Health Clinic on Thursday, promoting his plan to expand access to health care if elected.
“It was a great opportunity to learn about the work they are doing around behavioral health, physical health, and dental,” said Crowley. “But also speaks to what we need to do to make sure no one is falling through the cracks. Investing upstream in preventative care.”
He says one focus of his campaign will be expanding access to healthcare through expanding BadgerCare and access for all. “Building those relationships with our most vulnerable populations, whether we are talking about women, refugees, or so on; we need to make sure no one falls through the cracks. For me, that means expanding BadgerCare and having mobile crisis units in our rural communities across the state.”
Crowley also reacted to the news of a growing state surplus, which is now projected to reach nearly $3 billion. He says if elected, he would work with the Legislature to return as much of that to the taxpayers as possible.
“We know that there is an affordability crisis. We know people can’t afford their property taxes, food on their table, or utilities. So for one, we want to make sure that there is a level of property tax relief and make sure we invest in our public schools, which would [also] ease some property tax pressures.”
He said investments in healthcare would also be a priority, but he knows the final decision isn’t entirely his. “I’m a creature of the Legislature. I’ve been there before. [If elected] I’m going to make sure we work with our legislatures, work with community members, and all of our municipalities to make sure we are making the best decision for Wisconsin.”
Republican candidate Tom Tiffany released the following statement on the projected numbers: “A bigger projected surplus is more proof that Wisconsinites are overtaxed. It’s not a green light for Madison and David Crowley to spend more of your money. It’s a sign that government is taking too much of it. As governor, I’ll return the entire surplus to taxpayers and deliver lasting tax relief for working families so you can keep more of what you earn year after year,” said Tiffany.
