WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau woman will, for now, not serve prison time for one count of child abuse.
Shawna Munguia pleaded no contest to the charge back in May as part of a deal to avoid a jury trial. On Wednesday, a judge handed her a six-month jail term as part of an imposed and stayed sentence. Charges stem from injuries sustained by a child who was under her care in May of 2025.
The sentence places her on probation for 7.5 years and includes a six-month stay in the Marathon County Jail, which she must report to in the next two weeks. Should she complete the probation, which also includes anger management and counseling, she will not serve the prison term. The deal also includes a no-contact order with the victim and their family, restitution, and a letter of apology.
She will also be prohibited from working in any sort of daycare setting.
The child was hospitalized in Wausau and was immediately sent on to the pediatric intensive care center at Marshfield Children’s. Doctors determined that their injuries, including a skull fracture and brain bleeding, were the result of repeated, abusive trauma.
State records also indicate she was running an unlicensed in-home childcare facility.
The 36-year-old previously pled not guilty to the charge and was bound over for trial in July 2025. Though trial dates were never set, the sides announced a plea deal in May. She had faced up to 7.5 years in prison plus extended supervision for the count.
