STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza is asking residents to stay home for the rest of the day due to damage from Thursday’s ice storm.
Wiza says while the surface of the roads or sidewalks may be fine, many of them are blocked by downed trees or power lines. Public Works crews and WPS workers are out clearing those areas, meaning residents should limit travel to allow them space to work.
“Keep yourself and family safe. Check on neighbors when needed and we’ll worry about the cleanup after the danger has passed,” said Wiza via a press release.
As of 3:00 PM, about 18,000 WPS customers were without power in Portage County. Some 7,000 of those customers were in Stevens Point.
Residents are encouraged to report blocked roadways by calling the Police Department non-emergency number at 715-346- 1500. Emergencies, such as downed power lines, should be reported by calling 911.
Wiza says the city will likely extend hours at the yard waste site next week to allow residents to dispose of branches. If needed, a city-wide pickup effort could also be scheduled.
