WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny recognized the city’s Public Works Department for their efforts to clear streets and sidewalks following a two-day blizzard that brought nearly 31 inches of snow last week.
Diny presented the department with a Mayoral citation for recognition of exemplary service, saying the team demonstrated extraordinary dedication, skill, and resilience.
“The plow operators, mechanics, supervisors, dispatchers, and support personnel worked relentlessly around the clock through blizzard conditions, high winds, heavy drifting, and near-zero visibility to clear essential roadways, maintain emergency access, and safeguard our community during one of the most intense snow events in recorded history,” said Mayor Diny, reading from the declaration.
Public Works Supervisor Kevin Koester was quick to credit the department’s mechanic crew with keeping the plows and loaders on the road, saying they drove “straight into the storm” to get to work.
“I’ll plow with you guys any day of the week. They did [an excellent] job,” said Koester.

Wausau reset at least four snowfall records thanks to the storm, including single-day snowfall totals for March 15 and 16. Other records broken include the biggest snow event and the most snow for March. Many of those records have stood since the 1950s. The snowfall record for March 16th had stood since 1917.
