Sean Dumais
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of failing to provide food, water, and clean living conditions for multiple dogs under his care has entered a plea to more than 40 counts related to animal abuse and theft.
Sean Dumais entered a not guilty plea to charges including felony counts of theft in a business setting and mistreatment of animals, causing death. The list also includes intentional mistreatment of animals, failing to provide proper food, and failing to provide proper shelter.
Dumais, a former Trustee for the Village of Kronenwetter, is accused of failing to provide food and clean water for the animals while he was in charge of Central Wisconsin K9 in Schofield. Officials say the dogs were living in filthy conditions and showed signs of severe malnutrition when they were taken from the facility.
The 50-year-old is also accused of taking more than $100,000 from an Illinois dog rescue, promising services and treatment for the animals that were never rendered.
The dogs were turned over to the Humane Society of Marathon County for treatment and care.
Charges carry modifiers for being a party to the crime. A second person, Kalib Suchomski, is also facing similar charges. Both men face 14 years in prison if found guilty on the felony counts for mistreatment of animals, causing death. Dumais faces an additional 12.5 years for felony theft in a business setting.
The remaining charges are Class A Misdemeanors, which come with a maximum sentence of nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines.
Dumais is free after posting a $5,000 cash bond with several conditions, including no contact with, or possession of, domestic animals. He will return to court on May 21st.
Suchomski entered a not guilty plea to his charges in December and is due back in court on April 27th. In the meantime, he’s being held on a $20,000 bond.
