TOWN OF CRESCENT, WI (WSAU) — A Rhinelander-area Elementary School was put on a 45-minute lockdown after staff reported hearing something that sounded like gunfire during a recess period.
Staff at the Crescent School said they thought they heard gunfire Monday morning. Officers from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office were immediately notified, and the school was put in lockdown.
Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and didn’t find anything suspicious or signs of a shooting. No nearby residents reported seeing or hearing anything that concerned them either.
Once officers confirmed there was “no evidence of a threat,” the lockdown was lifted. Students and staff were never in danger, and regular activities and instruction resumed immediately after the all clear.
School officials thanked everyone for their cooperation, adding that the lockdown and investigation were “precautionary measures.”
