ANTIGO, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An area family is without a home after a fire erupted in a garage and spread to an attached home in Antigo. The City of Antigo Fire Department responded to the scene early Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called to the 500 block of 5th Avenue just after 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they found that residents had already evacuated safely with the assistance of Antigo Police.
“The garage at the rear of the home was fully engulfed in flames,” said Antigo Fire Chief Corey Smith. The fire was also spreading to the second story of the home.
Smith said that cold weather conditions made fighting the fire challenging. Additional personnel were brought in through a Mutual Aid Box Alarm, including help from Rural Fire Control and fire departments from the Town of Antigo, Birnamwood, Hatley, and Merrill.
Birnamwood EMS and the Antigo Street Department provided further assistance. Although the fire started in the garage, the exact cause remains undetermined.
