WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — After six years of planning, meetings, false starts, and construction, Wausau’s Foundry on 3rd development is open for business.
Business and community leaders gathered with T Wall enterprises to cut the ribbon on the mixed-use development. President Terrence Wall says the development is designed to provide a boost to businesses already operating along 3rd Street. “[We’re looking at] a wide variety,” said Wall. “Everything from hair salon to coffee shops and restaurants. Different places like realtors, insurance agents, financial companies, [or] somebody selling a product.
“It’s a way of anchoring the downtown,” added Wall. “It’s like a capstone, a rock to steady [the area] and bring new life and vitality.”
Wall says they are in talks with about a dozen interested businesses for the commercial space. The building also includes about 150 residential united, about 20% of which are already leased.
“We are getting a wide variety of units leased. I mean, Studios, one [bedroom,] two [bedroom.] We’ve gotten younger people, professionals, older empty nesters moving out of homes to enjoy the view of [Rib] Mountain and downtown. It’s a huge variety, a mix of people,” said Wall.
Among those in attendance for the ribbon cutting were Wausau Mayor Doug Diny, who did the honors along with Wall, and business leaders, including Greater Wausau Chamber CEO Dave Eckman.
Wall says plans are in the works for a second phase of the development, which will include another 150 residential units and amenities such as a pool, hot tub, and golf simulator. There is no timeline for when that building will break ground.
