MOSINEE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The American Red Cross is looking to help out with relief efforts in Anchorage Alaska after the effects of Typhoon Halong. Along with their help is a local volunteer taking off from Central Wisconsin Airport.
“I’m always ready to go help when there’s a need,” said Paul Voight, a disaster response volunteer with the Red Cross.
Voight is from Marshfield and has been volunteering for disaster relief for three years, with this mission marking his 25th deployment. He will be assisting with relief efforts in Alaska, where many residents have been displaced by the typhoon.
“There are a lot of people displaced their homes have been devastated, they’ve lost everything. I just want to be one of the many volunteers that are there now helping out.” said Voight.
Voight’s deployment is expected to last two to three weeks. As typhoon victims are evacuated from their homes to Anchorage for safety, he will help build shelters but notes that his role could change as the situation evolves.
“It means a lot, and I’ve met so many great volunteers, so I get to meet up with these great volunteers and we are all there helping out doing whatever we can to get people back on the road to recovery,” said Voight. “They’ve been devastated, they’ve lost everything, we just want to help them get back.”
