MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Attorney General Josh Kaul says he will not run for Governor in 2026.
The Associated Press reports that the Democrat will run for a third term as AG, citing a press release from Kaul, a seat he first won in 2018, the same year that Governor Tony Evers won his first term.
“This is a pivotal time for our nation,” Kaul said in the release. “Some of our most basic rights are under threat. Severe cuts have been made to programs that provide opportunities and have helped communities move forward. It’s critical that we continue to have an AG who will stand up for our freedoms and the rule of law.”
Kaul’s decision was closely watched by many, as the field of Democratic candidates continues to swell after Evers announced he would not seek a third term. That list includes current Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, former WEDC Secretary Missy Hughes, and current Legislators Keldya Roys and Francesca Hong. Republicans in the race include Congressman Tom Tiffany and Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann.
Wisconsin’s last three gubernatorial elections have been decided by five points or less.
