WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The City of Wausau has announced the purchase of the former MBX property along the Wisconsin River, with the intent to flip the land for further riverfront redevelopment.
The land, located at 201 N 1st Ave, will offer a “blank canvas” for further riverfront redevelopment with an eye towards ” enhancing quality of life, environmental stewardship, and economic vitality,” according to a press release from the city.
The Judd S. Alexander Foundation contributed a $250,000 grant to help close the deal, allowing the city to close the deal without impacting financial stability or public services.
“Thanks to the Judd S. Alexander Foundation’s support and the Common Council’s dedication, we’ve turned a shared vision into reality without compromising essential services like public safety,” said Mayor Doug Diny. “This is a win for every Wausau resident.”
The future of the site will be determined through discussions with stakeholders and developers, with an emphasis on public benefit like affordable housing, recreational amenities, commercial opportunities, and expanded access to the riverfront trail system.
Those who would like to comment or get involved in the redevelopment of the site should contact Development Director Randy Fifrick at 715-261-6684.
