Jared Thompson
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau Fire Department Chief is free after signing a $25,000 signature bond after he was formally charged with three counts of misconduct in office, accused of stealing thousands of vials of pain medication from the Department.
Jared Thompson appeared in a Marathon County Courtroom on Friday, where he waived his right to a reading of the complaint and time limits for a preliminary hearing. A judge then set a pretrial conference for October 8th.
Investigators say the 46-year-old would inject himself with the pain medications while at the firehouse. Co-workers blew the whistle on him after finding signs of drug use in a bathroom, including bloody gauze and tamper seals.
Thompson was in charge of ordering the drugs and stocking them in ambulances. An audit showed the department ordered more than 1,000 vials of hydromorphone and fentanyl from January to mid-June 2025. Most of those vials were unaccounted for.
For comparison, the Department purchased approximately 11 vials of hydromorphone and approximately 92 vials of fentanyl in 2023.
Conditions of Thompson’s bond include a full no-contact order with the City of Wausau. City leaders have confirmed that he is on leave from the department. He must also maintain absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol and cannot be employed in a pharmacy or hospital setting.
