WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau teacher is once again launching the Food For Hope turkey drive to help families in need this holiday season.
Rob Hughes says the goal is to donate supplies for a traditional ham or turkey dinner plus some side dishes to anyone in need. It’s his way of giving back to those that helped his family when he was young.
“I grew up in poverty, I was on the other side of this. When I was in the second grade strangers brought over food and Christmas presents. That’s where this whole thing started. Strangers had the compassion to help my family out.”
Now, Hughes works with leaders in both the Wausau and D.C. Everest School Districts to help identify those families in need of a little extra help for their holiday meals. Recently he’s also reached out to groups such as the Neighbors’ Place and Women’s Community to identify more families in need as he’s been able to raise more money.
He says they’ve gone from raising around $1,000 in the first year to $7,000 last year. “Each year it’s grown a little bit. Last year we were able to feed 700 families with a ham or a turkey. I’m really proud of that.”
Hughes works with Trig’s to negotiate a price on the turkeys and hams. He says thanks to another large donation this year families will also be able to purchase items for side dishes and desserts as well.
The theme for this year’s donation drive is “We are You.” Hughes says that comes from how difficult this year has been for everyone, and a desire to work together to make things better.
Those who wish to donate may do so online through the Wausau School District foundation by designating their funds for either “Food for Hope” or “Turkey Drive.” Donations can be made offline as well by dropping off a check made payable to Zoro’s Locker or cash at Wausau East High School.
