MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Voters in Marshfield are invited to learn more about an April 1st referendum question calling for an increased tax levy to hire and retain firefighter/paramedic positions within the fire department.
The question asks for a 1.6% increase in the levy, or about $257,000 annually, which would restore staffing to 2021 levels. Officials say that would amount to a $1.11 per month increase on the mill rate, meaning a $100,000 home would pay an additional $13.28 per year to support the positions.
Officials say the two extra positions will help them handle an increased call volume. They also argue that it will help decrease response time and improve their ability to respond to multiple calls simultaneously.
Thursday’s session begins at 6:30 PM at the UWSP Marshfield campus in the connecting hallway between the Science and STEM buildings. Two additional sessions are also scheduled for March 13th (Hotel Marshfield) and 27th (Community Center).
The question is one of several local and state issues voters will see on their April 1st ballot. To check your voter registration status, find your polling place, or see a sample ballot for the April 1st election, visit the myVote WI website by clicking here.
The city has sent out postcards with more information on the proposal, which you can see by clicking here.
