Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — After three days of hearings, a Lincoln County judge has ruled that the reckless homicide case against 17-year-old Javarius Hurd will remain in adult court.
Hurd is accused of attacking two correctional officers at the Lincoln Hills Youth Prison last spring, starting when he allegedly threw a cup of soap at a female officer and then fleeing to an outdoor recreation area.
Security camera footage then shows him lashing out at another officer who was trying to restrain him. That officer, identified as Cory Proulx, fell and hit his head on a hard surface. He was hospitalized and died a few hours later.
Investigators believe Hurd, who was 16 at the time of the incident, had been planning to attack the female officer because he felt she was treating him unfairly.
A judge also determined that Hurd will remain in the Lincoln County Jail, where he is being held on a $100,000 bond.
Charges against Hurd also include two counts of battery by prisoners. He faces more than 70 years in prison if found guilty on all counts. He has yet to enter a plea to the charges.
Wednesday’s decision came through a reverse waiver process. No further court action was immediately scheduled.
