WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Governor Evers visited and toured The Women’s Community in Wausau Thursday.
The Women’s Community is one of numerous Wisconsin Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) agencies that depend on financial assistance from the state and federal government.
In his 2025-2027 budget proposal, Governor Evers directed $66 million to support those VOCA organizations. Those funds would be used to make up for less federal VOCA funding.
After touring The Women’s Community, he said the services they provide are worth the financial investment. “I mean, that used to be federal funds,” said Evers. “We don’t have –I don’t think– any hope that that’s going to be re-upped. So, we’re going to put money in the budget for it.”
If approved, it would mark a substantial increase in state funding.
In 2023 Wisconsin Act 241, Evers set $10 million for violence prevention and crime victim services. The Women’s Community was awarded $250,000 in competitive grants through VOCA for the 2024-2025 cycle. Other agencies, like The Wisconsin Rapids Family Center, were awarded the same dollar amount.
