WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A new economic impact study shows that the Nine Mile Forest and Recreation area had a more than $3 million economic impact on the Wausau area.
“Nine Mile is a cornerstone of our community’s outdoor recreation scene,” said Visit Wausau Executive Director Tim White in a press release. “This report affirms what we’ve known for years: outdoor recreation is a major economic driver that strengthens local businesses and enhances the quality of life in Marathon County.”
White notes that the area hosts numerous events and competitions throughout the year. It also provides year-round recreation opportunities like snowshoeing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, hunting, and bicycling.
The report was produced as part of the Wisconsin Office of Outdoor Recreation’s innovative DIY Economic Impact Report program, which empowers local stakeholders to measure the localized economic benefits of outdoor recreation. The program’s success extends across Wisconsin, with five reports collectively detailing $27.3 million in economic activity generated by destinations such as Eau Claire’s paved trail system, Dodge County Parks, and the Cheese Country Trails in Lafayette County.
