WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wait times of more than 60 minutes to vote were not uncommon in Wausau on Tuesday, and Marathon County’s voter turnout data reflects that.
Initial numbers show that more than 95% of voters participated in Tuesday’s election, and thousands of new voter registrations were also made at the polls.
Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe says we should expect similar numbers once the statewide results are certified. “Until the canvas and certification process is completed we at the state don’t really have an aggregate of what [statewide] turnout looks like. But looking at unofficial totals and what’s been reported [in other areas] it does look like [Tuesday] was potentially a very high turnout election.”
Wolfe credits local clerks and other election officials for making the day run smoothly for voters. “Well-run elections do not happen by accident. They are the result of years of training and preparation by our local election officials.Wisconsinites should be proud of their efforts.”
Many polling places saw long lines throughout the day. The crowds came after two weeks of early in-person, absentee voting which also brought strong numbers.
Final numbers will be canvassed at the local level over the next few weeks before they are certified by the state Elections Commission in early December.
