MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The race for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin is still too close to call, with results still outstanding for areas including Milwaukee and Green Bay.
Incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s election night party in downtown Madison ended without Baldwin making an appearance. But she is declaring victory very early this morning.
Lt. Governor Sara Rodriguez provided updates to supporters throughout the night. She came out a little after midnight with a message for Baldwin’s supporters.
“We’ve said this from the beginning that this is going to be close,” said Rodriguez. “We are Wisconsin. This is what we are known for, but we are encouraged by what we see. Tammy is still in a strong position to win. There are hundreds of thousands of votes left to be counted, most of them early vote. It is going to be a long night though. We don’t want to keep you here all night, so we are going to let you go home and get some sleep, but thank you so much for your support, for this campaign, and all you have done for Wisconsin.”
Baldwin’s opponent, Eric Hovde, also held his Election Night party in Madison.
Hovde made a brief appearance after midnight, but did not provide any formal remarks.
The crowd that showed up for Baldwin’s party dwindled as the night went on with only a few dozen remaining by the time they were asked to head out.
“I feel like she really understands the issues that are important to the constituency that she represents and I don’t feel that way about the other guy,” said Ian Judge-Lord, a Baldwin supporter from Madison.
