OUTAGAMIE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Deer Hunt 2024 is still weeks away, but thousands are getting ready for the upcoming nine-day campaign.
Officials from the Department of Natural Resources say another relatively mild winter means there are plenty of deer on the landscape.
Experts say Northeast Wisconsin has been warm and dry, and crops like corn are being harvested ahead of schedule.
On the flip side, the 2024 season opener falls as late as it possibly can on the calendar.
“Deer movement during daylight hours is reducing as we get further away from early November. And in the past, we’ve seen an influence on that, with the harvest numbers of a potential drop of 10 percent or more,” said Jeff Pritzl, DNR State Deer program specialist.
Experts say all things considered, they anticipate a similar harvest to last year.
That’s when hunters bagged 17.6% fewer deer than in 2023.
The gun deer season runs from Saturday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Dec. 1.
