DENVER, CO and MADISON, WI (WSAU) — It was a split decision for the Wisconsin hockey programs on Friday as the men fell to top-ranked Denver University while the women picked up their 10th straight win.
The Badger men struck first on a goal from Gavin Morrissey four minutes into the game but the Pioneers wouldn’t stay down long, Eric Polkamp answered about three minutes later to tie the game at 1. Morrissey assisted on Quinn Finley’s goal midway through the first which gave Wisconsin a brief 2-1 lead.
Denver struck back to send the game to the first intermission at 2-2. A pair of third-period goals then gave the Pioneers a 4-2 victory.
Tommy Scarfone made 21 saves in the loss for #20 Wisconsin (1-4-0). The same two teams play again this evening at Magness Arena in Denver, though there will be no radio coverage on WSAU due to Badger football.
The Wisconsin women blanked Bemidji State 6-0 for their 10th straight win to open the season and 6th straight WCHA victory.
Lacey Eden scored a pair of goals and recorded an assist for a three-point evening. Kelly Gorbatenko, Cassie Hall, and Kirsten Simms each scored identical one goal, two assist stat lines.
Laila Edwards rounded out the scoring with one goal.
The Badgers played both of their goalies. Ava McNaughton started and went the first 40 minutes making eight saves. Fifth-year Senior Quinn Kuntz, who spent the last four years at Ohio State, came on in the 3rd and made four saves to preserve the shutout.
The Badgers took the two-game series by a combined score of 10-0. Next up is a pair of games against St. Cloud State next weekend.
