MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The teen charged as an accomplice in the death of Lincoln Hills correctional officer Corey Proulx will go to trial for one count of felony murder.
Rian Nyblom was bound over for trial for his alleged role in the incident. Investigators say he provided Javairus Hurd with a cup of soap, which Hurd threw at an officer before attacking her.
The 17-year-old Nyblom also faces a charge of battery by prisoners. Both carry modifiers for being a party to the crime, meaning he didn’t act alone.

Hurd is facing charges of reckless homicide and felony murder for allegedly killing Proulx following a confrontation with a female officer. Hurd is said to have thrown the soap in her face and assaulted her. He then left the scene and was chased down by Proulx, who tried to restrain him. Hurd allegedly assaulted him, causing him to fall over and hit his head on a hard surface.
Proulx was rushed to a local hospital where he was later declared brain dead. His family chose to donate his organs after his death.
Hurd’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 9th. Nyblom’s court appearance was cut short by a power outage in Merrill, so further court action was not immediately scheduled. A separate scheduling conference will be held on Thursday to schedule an arrangement and other court actions.
