STOUGHTON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – With school starting for many students this week, both drivers and pedestrians need to keep road safety in mind.
As students head back to school, the Stoughton Police Department is urging drivers to be extra careful. Over the Labor Day weekend, police tested whether drivers would stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. They ended up pulling over 59 drivers for not stopping.
“Slow down and be aware of your surroundings,” said Sgt. Kade Wilkinson with the Stoughton Police Department. “In Wisconsin, we have a lot of unmarked crosswalks. Anywhere where there’s a sidewalk that’s going to cross the street, even if there’s not a crosswalk marked on the ground in white paint, it is still considered a crosswalk under Wisconsin law.”
Police are also reminding pedestrians to follow traffic signals and cross only at designated crosswalks. Not following these rules can put everyone at risk.
Police say that most tickets issued during the school year are for drivers illegally passing school buses. This year, officers will be actively monitoring school zones to watch for both drivers and pedestrians.
In school zones, the speed limit drops to 15 miles per hour. So if you normally drive at 25 miles per hour, you’re actually going 10 miles per hour over the limit, which could easily get you pulled over.
