IRMA, WI (WSAU) — Two staffers at the Lincoln Hills Youth Prison near Irma have been injured after they were attacked by one of the residents on Monday.
Officials say the 16-year-old boy had just returned to the facility after a recreation period when he attacked one of the workers. They were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
Later in the evening, that same boy is said to have attacked another worker who suffered serious injuries after hitting their head on concrete. That worker has been hospitalized in critical condition.
The Department of Corrections says the boy was not injured in either incident. His identity has not been released.
State Representative Calvin Callahan and Senator Mary Felzkowski released a joint statement regarding the incident to WAOW TV, which reads:
“Our thoughts are with the injured officer and his family, and our prayers go out to him for a successful and swift recovery,” they said. “As details of this incident emerge, we are acutely aware of the frustrations and anger in our community over this situation. There will be a time for discussions of accountability and an analysis of how we got here, but now is not that time. All we know with certainty now is that a family in our community is facing one of their worst fears. We send our prayers to the family, and hope they know our thoughts are with them during this agonizing time.”
No further details have been released. It’s the second incident involving a student and staff at Lincoln Hills in the last three months. Three staffers were injured in an incident involving a 17-year-old student in March.
