WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau Parks & Recs committee met on Monday afternoon to begin discussions on what could be done about updates to the South River Front.
The committee looked at a handful of options and viewed possible models for what each project could look like if eventually approved and completed. An exact location was not decided during the meeting but the committee was interested in what the building could possibly be.
Wausau City Planner Brad Lenz was uncertain when asked about a timeline on the South River Front project saying, “There is not a concrete timeline…the county is looking at vacating some of those buildings and some have already been vacated.” he continued by saying “a lot of it hinges on the counties timeline as well as a timeline for when the city and the county can agree on how to work together to do something else with those properties but there isn’t a definitive timeline on it.”
Lenz also discussed the opportunities the public has had to indicate what they would like done with the area saying, “We estimated that we spoke to about 300 people at that one event (farmers market) and we had another event at the Whitewater music hall but we can and there was some input done three years but we can dust it off and get more input.”
Alderperson Tom Killian responded by requesting a public input meeting in the lobby of Island Place if that would be able to be accommodated.
Director Jamie Polly acknowledged that there is a ways to go in planning the project and that most of the decisions moving forward will depend on what the county decides to do with the properties after 2025.
