MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — A bipartisan group of Assembly members officially launched a new task force dedicated to police reform and racial equity on Tuesday.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) will chair the group alongside Rep. Shiela Stubbs (D-Madison). The first thing on the agenda is already known.
“Discussions surrounding policing reforms would be held in the next few months,” Stieneke told WTAQ. “But this discussion is going to have to go far beyond that.”
The task force also plans on discussing racial education disparities and other equity issues.
“We need everybody to be in agreement on legislation in order to move it forward and eventually see it get passed,” Stieneke said. “That’s why this task force is so important.”
There isn’t an end date on the task force. Stieneke say its work will continue as long as it’s needed.
The task force comes in the weeks following a special session called by Governor Tony Evers on police reform that ended without any legislation being passed. Republicans criticized that session as political posturing.
