MADISON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A former Mosinee Middle School Teacher has dropped her lawsuit against a student over claims of assault.
WAOW TV reports that Christy Mathis, a former art teacher a the school, had sued the student after she lost her job over the accusations. But that has been dismissed after the student admitted that her actions did not intend to reach the level that they did.
The student made the following statement: “On March 25, 2021, I reported an incident of physical contact by Ms. Mathis in my art class. While I never intended for my complaint against Ms. Mathis to escalate to the level it did, I recognize my actions caused Ms. Mathis and her family pain and hardship. I regret the role I played in this situation, and hope others in this community will not view Ms. Mathis unfavorably moving forward.”
The lawsuit claims that the accusations stemmed from the student’s anger over her enforcement of the school’s cell phone policy. The suit claimed Mathis was the victim of lies and her civil rights were violated. Christy’s husband is also claiming loss of spousal consortium as part of the suit.
The charges were eventually dropped after a Marathon County judge found insufficient evidence in the case.
The filing also named the school and the Mosinee Police Chief as defendants. It’s unclear if the couple’s legal action against those groups is still in progress.
