WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Members of the Marathon County Board of Supervisors held a listening session Tuesday regarding the Community Corner Clubhouse, which could be eliminated as part of NCHC’s budget.
District 33 Supervisor Ron Covelli, a member of the Health and Human Services Committee, said it was a chance for him to learn about a program that he was largely unaware of until now. “I really wanted to get a perspective on what the Community Corner Clubhouse is all about.”
Members told stories of how programs and services offered through the Clubhouse had helped them get on their feet and become productive members of the community through job training and access to mental health services. Many of those who spoke also said they don’t feel they would have been as successful in a structured government program because the Clubhouse allowed them to approach treatment differently.
Covelli says after the nearly two-hour session he feels like understands the importance of the program to the community, it’s just a matter of figuring out the financing. “How everything works with Northcentral Health Care, how they’ve funded it [before], then we can understand better the resources that we need to possibly keep it going.
“It’s important for the community to have this program,” he added. “It’s important for mental health to have connections. Especially connections with people in the community that understand the issues that people are going through in their lives.”
The Health and Human Services Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday afternoon, and a discussion on the Clubhouse is part of the agenda.
