STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – UW-Stevens Point is celebrating Native American education and culture, with events every day this week.
It’s part of Native American Awareness Week, which runs through 7th. It began on Monday with an acknowledgment ceremony.
The American Indians Reaching for Opportunities group, or ‘AIRO’, is celebrating their 50th anniversary. The invocation began with a prayer in Hochunk, delivered by AIRO alumni Allen Cloud.
AIRO encourages awareness and understanding of indigenous people, members said the group’s presence on campus means a lot to them.
“It’s always been a part of why I wanted to come to Stevens Point, cause I knew they had a spot where I could feel at home away from home.” said Nita Alloway, a freshman at UWSP and AIRO member.
She said she appreciates the efforts the campus goes to provide cultural understanding and appreciation.
