WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Despite a pandemic causing many differences, the City of Wausau is on track to keep within its budget for 2020 at its mid-year review.
A mid-year general fund budget update was given to the Wausau Finance Committee on Tuesday evening. City Finance Director Maryanne Groat says the city’s general fund revenue is on track for this time of year. “From a revenue standpoint, I think we’re looking good as we come to the second half of the year. And there’s not anything that I”m overly concerned about. We’re fortunate here in Wausau that we’re not experiencing major declines in our revenues. But that means we don’t get certain revenues either like sales tax.”
For the general fund’s expense side of the budget, Groat says there are no concerns there either. The only major difference in the budget Groat noted was that the Department of Public Works is operating under budget compared to 2019.
“The Department of Public Works is running at $3.2 million through June 30th of this year versus almost $4 million last year. A lot of that is winter maintenance that we had in 2019 that we’re not experiencing in 2020 with a budget of $6.9 million.”
Compared to last year’s budget the 2020 budget has some revenue timing differences but no differences to cause any concern at the city level. As of June 30th, 2020 the city has spent 46.4% of its yearly budget. That figure is almost 2% less than it was at the same time in 2019.
