WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Gleason man who shot at a Marathon County Sheriff’s deputy was trying to commit “suicide by cop” at the time.
A six month investigation is leading to charges against 25 year old Zachary D. Schwartz of Gleason. He is being charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, first degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and possession of meth & cocaine and other charges.
The incident happened back on August 13 2021 that started with a high speed chase in Lincoln County. Schwartz was spotted at a car dealership in the Town of Maine and he pulled out a gun and fired at deputy Nathan Olig. Olig returned fire striking Schwartz and a woman passenger. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.
In later Facebook messages sent by Schwartz to a friend he said that he shot at Olig in order to “get him to shoot me, suicide by cop”.
Schwartz was returned to prison afer being found to be on extended supervision for an earlier crime at the time of the shooting.
Future court dates have not been set.
