WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A new chapter is beginning for The Waterside Building, between the Dudley Tower and the Marathon County Public Library.
The space mostly empty for about 3 years but Wausau Mayor Dough Diny says he’s excited to see the building come back to life.
“I’m looking forward to it. In fact I see some activity over there now. I see lights there. I think it’s going to be a great little place to live,” says Diny.
At the last city council meeting, they officially approved the $10 million dollar project, with the city supplementing $750,000 in support towards the renovations.
“Part of that was to buy down our agreement that we had. Until 2062 we are required to hold 480 stalls in that spot,” say Diny. “We were able to negotiate that part of the contract out to 150 to make it a little more manageable. And we’re also being able to be paid for those spots.”
He adds that this apartment complex is the missing middle piece in the housing puzzle.
“Not the high-end, not the low-end but more of a workforce opportunity. They are going to be nice because they are right on the river. But they’ll lack some of the amenities that you see at the Foundry with the gyms and the various more high-end development things,” says Diny.
But also stating that the building’s location is favorable to residents.
“I think it fits what we need downtown. It’s right next to the landmark which is full. And there are a lot of people who still work downtown who still want to live downtown,” says Diny.
